Do you need a permit for a 6-yard skip in Edinburgh?
A 6-yard skip follows the same permit rules as every other size.
On a driveway or private land? The Edinburgh application form is for skips on a road. A skip on private land is placed at your own risk, so pick a spot that can take the weight.
On an Edinburgh road? You need a permit. The City of Edinburgh Council issues it as roads authority. Tell us when you book so the permit can be sorted before delivery.

Edinburgh permit rules

  • The council asks for at least 5 working days' notice once it has everything it needs, and longer if a site meeting is needed.
  • It cannot give a general approval time, so the skip waits for the formal approval.
  • Fixed penalty notices can be issued for breaching permit conditions, and the council can withdraw a permit at any time. Permit fees are non-refundable.

Where a skip cannot go

  • On Greenways, Clearways or double yellow lines
  • On streets on the tram route restriction list
  • In a parking bay without a suspension, which is charged
The council does not allow roll-on roll-off skips, and the maximum size is 5 metres by 2 metres.

Before you book

  • Tell us the exact street and spot when you book.
  • Keep the load level with the top rim and boards off.

One bathroom, one border or one path? The 6 yard in Edinburgh

It is 2.6 m long, 1.5 m wide and 1.25 m high. That is room for 40 to 60 bin bags and up to 6 tonnes.

Ideal uses for a 6 yard skip in Edinburgh

  • A new bathroom: Suite, tiles and floor covering, plus the packaging from the replacement. See our bathroom refit guide.
  • A neglected border: Shrubs, roots and turf. Turf is heavy, so the weight limit matters more than space. See our garden clearance guide.
  • A cracked garden path: Slabs, edging and hardcore. See our driveway and patio removal guide.
  • The box room: Wooden furniture, shelving and boxes. A mattress is a prohibited item.

Choosing the right size

Describe the job in one phrase. If it needs 'and' to connect two parts, take the 8 yard. If it does not, the 6 yard is enough.

Weight

Up to 6 tonnes. Load level with the top rim. A few barrow loads of turf or slab will use up much of the limit.

Placement and permits

Check 2.6 m against your drive. On a public road or pavement the permit comes from City of Edinburgh Council, and applying is your job. If anything about access is awkward, say so when you book, as a delivery that cannot go ahead can incur a wasted journey charge.
