Skip hire FAQs
What access does the skip lorry need?
Roughly 3 metres of width, 4 metres of overhead clearance (watch for cables, trees and archways) and firm ground. If access is tight, send a photo with your booking - it's the fastest way to avoid a wasted journey charge for both of us.
Which skip size do I need?
For most home jobs the 8-yard skip is the sweet spot. For trade and site work, start at the 12-yard - running out of skip mid-job costs more than the size difference. When in doubt, size up one.
What can't go in a skip?
Some items can't go in a standard mixed waste skip because they need specialist disposal: **Hazardous and regulated waste:** asbestos, gas bottles, oil, petrol, diesel, paint and other liquids, batteries, fluorescent tubes, clinical waste and sharps, explosives, corrosive or toxic substances, and animal waste. Electrical items: fridges, freezers, TVs, monitors, and any other electrical goods. Upholstered furniture and mattresses: sofas, armchairs, office chairs, upholstered headboards, cushioned furniture, and mattresses. These need separate disposal under POPs regulations. Flooring: carpets, carpet underlay, and carpet tiles. Plasterboard: including dry-lined partition walls. It must always be disposed of separately, never in a mixed skip. Garden waste in a standard skip: tree stumps, roots, and logs. These are fine in a dedicated green waste or soil skip, just inform the team beforehand it will be single use. Tyres: all vehicle tyres. Not sure about an item? Ask your local team before loading it and we'll point you to the right option. Prohibited items found in a skip at collection are charged for specialist disposal , so it's always cheaper to check first.
Will there be extra charges after I book?
Only in specific, avoidable cases, all listed with prices before you book: overweight or overfilled skips, prohibited items found in the load, a wasted journey if the skip can't be delivered or collected - avoidable by telling us of changes in writing by 12pm the previous working day - and road permits where your council charges one.
How quickly can a skip be delivered?
Next working day delivery is available in most areas - order early in the day and you'll see tomorrow's date at checkout, before you pay.
Do I need a permit for my skip?
Only if the skip goes on a public road. On your own land - driveway, car park, yard - no permit is needed, and it's cheaper and faster. If you do need one, we apply to the council for you and confirm the exact cost before your delivery is scheduled.
