Is This Right for Your Project?
Perfect if you're:
Renovating a single bathroom or small bedroom
Clearing out a shed, small garage, or loft
Tidying up a small garden (30-40 wheelbarrow loads)
Doing an office or shop clearance
Small building jobs or repairs
Too small if you're:
- Renovating a kitchen (try our 8-yard skip)
- Clearing out a full garage or multiple rooms
- Major landscaping with heavy soil/rubble
Not sure? Most people doing bathroom renovations or garden tidy-ups choose this size.
What Actually Fits?
Think 40-60 black bin bags or:
- Bathroom renovation: Old bathroom suite, tiles, cabinet, flooring, packaging
- Small clearance: Shed contents, boxes, small flat-pack and wooden furniture, boxes, wardrobes, old tools, junk (upholstered chairs and mattresses need declaring), household junk
- Garden tidy-up: 2-3 tonnes of soil, hedge trimmings, old fence panels, turf
- Office clear-out: Desks, chairs, files, carpets, general office waste
- DIY project: timber offcuts, old flooring, tiles
Dimensions: Length: 2.6m Width: 1.5m Height: 1.25m - our most compact skip size

6-Yard vs 8-Yard - Which One?
Choose 6-yard if: Small bathroom, garden tidy-up, or office clearance
Choose 8-yard if: Kitchen renovation, full garage, or bigger building project
Still unsure? Go with the 8-yard - it's only slightly more and you won't risk running out of space.

Do you need a permit for a 6-yard skip in Barnsley?
A 6-yard skip follows the same rules as every other size. On private land, no permit. On the road, a permit.
On your driveway, in your garden or on other private land? No permit needed. Barnsley Council only licenses skips that sit on the highway. If you want the skip on a driveway or other private surface, that placement is at your own risk, so pick a spot that can take the weight.
On the road, pavement or verge? You need a permit. In Barnsley the highway covers more than the road itself: footways, verges, lay-bys and hardstandings all count. If the skip has to go on the road, tell us when you book so the permit can be sorted before delivery.
How skip permits work in Barnsley
- Cost: Barnsley Council charges a fee for each permit. Permit fees are non-refundable.
- Notice: the council needs notice before a skip goes on the highway, so book with some lead time.
- How long it lasts: a Barnsley permit runs for 7 or 14 days, depending on the type of street. If the skip needs to stay longer, a new permit is needed.
- No permit: a skip on the highway without a valid permit can be charged a retrospective fee, and the council can remove it.
Where a skip cannot go on a Barnsley street
- Within 20 metres of a junction
- On a bus stop, or anywhere waiting restrictions apply
- Anywhere it would leave less than 3 metres of road for other vehicles
- Over drains, fire hydrants or manholes
The council also requires road skips to sit with the long side along the kerb, guarded by at least three traffic cones and lit at night.
What you need to do
- Tell us the exact spot and any access issues when you book.
- Fill the skip level with the rim. No boards on the sides, and nothing that could fall onto the road.
- Keep anything flammable, hazardous or likely to rot out of a skip on the street. Check our prohibited items list before you load.
- Even with a permit, the council or the police can ask for a skip to be moved.
