Full Description
Our most compact skip for small jobs and tight spaces - the 4-yard skip handles 40-50 bin bags and fits almost anywhere. Perfect when you have limited space but still need proper waste removal.
Is This Right for Your Project?
Perfect if you're:
  • Doing a small bathroom or toilet refurbishment
  • Clearing out a small shed or understairs cupboard
  • Light garden tidy-up (20-30 wheelbarrow loads)
  • Small office clearance or shop refit
  • DIY projects with limited waste
Too small if you're:
  • Renovating an entire bathroom with lots of tiles (try 6-yard)
  • Clearing out a garage or loft (try 6-yard or 8-yard)
  • Any kitchen work (definitely need 8-yard minimum)
Most people underestimate their waste. If you're unsure between 4-yard and 6-yard, the 6-yard is safer and only slightly more.
What Actually Fits? Think 40-50 black bin bags or:
  • Small bathroom: Toilet, sink, small cabinet, some tiles, flooring
  • Garden tidy-up: 2 tonnes of soil, small hedge trimmings, old plants
  • Shed clearance: Garden tools, broken furniture, boxes, general junk
  • Small DIY: Old flooring and wood
  • Flat clearance: Unwanted flat-pack and wooden furniture, boxes, wardrobes, old tools, junk (upholstered chairs and mattresses need declaring), boxes, household items
Dimensions: Length: 1.83 m, Width: 1.22 m, Height: 0.91 m - our smallest skip
Weight limit: Up to 4 tonnes
Best for: Tight driveways, narrow access, small projects

Need a Permit? On your property (driveway/garden): No permit needed On the road: We arrange the permit for you
Why Not Just Use Bin Bags? 4-yard skip: Delivered tomorrow, fill over 14 days, we collect 40+ bin bags to the tip: £20-40 fuel + multiple trips + heavy lifting Council collection: Limited to 3-4 items, 1-2 week wait, restricted items
The skip saves time and your back. Even for "small" jobs with 40+ bags.
4-Yard vs 6-Yard - Which Size?
Choose 4-yard if: Very small job, tight space, definitely under 50 bin bags Choose 6-yard if: Full bathroom, shed clearance, or any uncertainty about amount
Honest advice: Most people underestimate their waste by 30-40%. The 6-yard skip is only slightly more and you won't risk needing a second skip.

Do you need a permit for a 4-yard skip in Barnsley?
The smallest skip still counts. A 4-yard skip on a Barnsley road needs a permit, just like a 16-yard.
On your driveway, in your garden or on other private land? No permit needed. Barnsley Council only licenses skips that sit on the highway. If you want the skip on a driveway or other private surface, that placement is at your own risk, so pick a spot that can take the weight.
On the road, pavement or verge? You need a permit. In Barnsley the highway covers more than the road itself: footways, verges, lay-bys and hardstandings all count. If the skip has to go on the road, tell us when you book so the permit can be sorted before delivery.

How skip permits work in Barnsley

  • Cost: Barnsley Council charges a fee for each permit. Permit fees are non-refundable.
  • Notice: the council needs notice before a skip goes on the highway, so book with some lead time.
  • How long it lasts: a Barnsley permit runs for 7 or 14 days, depending on the type of street. If the skip needs to stay longer, a new permit is needed.
  • No permit: a skip on the highway without a valid permit can be charged a retrospective fee, and the council can remove it.

Where a skip cannot go on a Barnsley street

  • Within 20 metres of a junction
  • On a bus stop, or anywhere waiting restrictions apply
  • Anywhere it would leave less than 3 metres of road for other vehicles
  • Over drains, fire hydrants or manholes
The council also requires road skips to sit with the long side along the kerb, guarded by at least three traffic cones and lit at night.

What you need to do

  • Tell us the exact spot and any access issues when you book.
  • Fill the skip level with the rim. No boards on the sides, and nothing that could fall onto the road.
  • Keep anything flammable, hazardous or likely to rot out of a skip on the street. Check our prohibited items list before you load.
  • Even with a permit, the council or the police can ask for a skip to be moved.

A small skip for small jobs in Barnsley

A 4-yard skip is for the jobs that are small but still too big for the bin.

Ideal uses for a 4 yard skip in Barnsley

  • Bathroom or toilet strip-out: Suite, basin, small cabinet and a few tiles. Fine for a cloakroom or a downstairs toilet. A full family bathroom with a lot of tiling needs a 6-yard. See our bathroom refit guide.
  • Shed and cupboard clear-outs: Old tools, broken wooden furniture and boxes from a shed, understairs cupboard or small store room.
  • Light garden tidy: Hedge trimmings, old plants and a small amount of soil. Heavy soil and turf fill the weight limit quickly, so keep those to a minimum. See our garden clearance guide.
  • Small DIY jobs: Offcuts, old flooring and packaging from one room. If more rooms are involved, go up a size.

Choosing the right size

4-yard or 6-yard? Pick the 4-yard if the job is one small space and you're sure you're under 50 bin bags. Pick the 6-yard for a full bathroom, a shed with a lot in it, or any doubt about the amount. If you're torn between a 4-yard and a 6-yard, the 6-yard gives you more room. An overfilled skip can be refused and charged, so spare space is safer.

Placement and permits

If the skip goes on a public road or pavement, you must get the council permit yourself. If it goes on your own driveway or land, tell us where when you book. Tell us about any access restrictions when you book. A delivery that cannot go ahead can incur a wasted journey charge. Placing a skip on a driveway, grass or pavement is at your own risk. We accept no liability for surface damage, and a waiver may be required.

Weight

Weight limit: up to 4 tonnes. The size is 4 yards of space, and the 4 tonnes is how much weight it can carry. They are two different numbers. Load to the top rim only, never above it.
